Our mission at Kavod Charter School (Kavod) is to develop socially responsible, respectful global citizens through an exceptional academic program that includes modern Hebrew, Spanish and the International Baccalaureate. We are a tuition-free public school for grades TK-8 in San Diego. Here are 10 more reasons to enroll at Kavod:

1. Academic Rigor

Kavod explorers (that’s what we call our students!) are high achievers who strive for academic excellence, and we cultivate that desire for knowledge with our rigorous curriculum. The modern Hebrew language is taught throughout the day in all subjects. Elementary students learn through a dynamic workshop model and middle school students take 9 rigorous classes in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP).

2. International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme

Kavod is one of only four middle schools in San Diego that offers the renowned IB MYP. This advanced program provides a comprehensive education to our middle school explorers, with the goal of developing curious, knowledgeable and empathetic individuals who strive to create a better world. The curriculum is designed to foster an understanding of cultures and respect for different beliefs and values and is recognized for its ability to build critical thinking skills.

3. Dual Language Learning

As a Seal of Biliteracy Pathway School, we value bilingualism as an asset, which is why we begin modern Hebrew with our youngest explorers along with Spanish exposure. Several studies show that students’ brains develop more rapidly and fully when they learn new languages early in life. Academic benefits include advanced focus and memory. Our explorers are better able to solve problems and connect concepts as they continue their studies in English and Hebrew. In middle school, explorers have the opportunity to earn High School Credit for both Hebrew and/or Spanish.

4. Global Awareness

Kavod explorers enjoy our curriculum that is infused with history and cultural lessons from around the world. We offer all of our students the opportunity to participate in cultural events, like our culture fair, as a way to learn about the diverse world around them. As we teach about global communities and regions across the world, explorers learn how interconnected we are, the importance of appreciating other cultures, and how much more there is to explore.

5. Respect = Appreciation

Kavod means honor and respect in Hebrew. We ensure these values are woven throughout all aspects of the school, creating a culture of honor and respect towards education and the learning process. As educators, we feel a tremendous responsibility to lead by example and show our explorers the value in respecting themselves, each other, and all communities.

6. A Culture of Service

Explorers learn to expand their view of community beyond our school and San Diego to the entire world. Through age-appropriate community service-learning activities integrated across the curriculum, explorers learn the values of understanding and respect for others in multiple contexts and communities. Good Deeds Day, one of our favorite school wide events of the year, engages explorers to give back to their community while developing compassion and empathy.

7. Robust, Well-Balanced Program

Our effective education model is well balanced and develops the whole child. Art, electives, enrichments, clubs and leadership are all incorporated into our day. We encourage a growth mindset in which explorers treat mistakes as learning experiences. Our daily implementation of mindfulness, meditation and yoga practices help everyone at Kavod enjoy an affirming and engaging education model. And families love our before and after school program that keeps kids at school in a safe and caring environment after hours.

8. Physical Education & Music

Physical activity helps our explorers focus and absorb our rigorous instruction. Instead of focusing on competition, our PE program is designed to build skill, flexibility, coordination, and confidence. Explorers practice running, gymnastics, and other skilled activities. Music instruction at Kavod helps young language learners develop reasoning, empathy, and imagination, alongside the joy and beauty of engaging in music.

9. The Kavod Team

Every member of the Kavod team commits to our philosophy that the growing explorers is the center of our mission. Our educators are passionate and devoted to help each and every student meet his or her full academic potential. We also provide tremendous professional support to help our teachers continually improve their skills.

10. Joy!

Joy plays an important role in our academically rigorous curriculum! When explorers love what they learn, and feel the enthusiasm from our educators, academic excellence follows. We infuse excitement and joy in our program with guest speakers, interactive learning activities, field trips, leadership camp, and so much more. Seeing the smiles on our explorers’ faces confirms that our approach to learning and growing is working.
