At Kavod Charter School we are committed to developing socially responsible, respectful, global citizens. To meet this goal, we employ the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) for our middle school explorers. We are proud to offer this rich framework for teaching and learning to the students of San Diego, tuition-free.
What is the IB MYP?
Implemented in over 5,600 schools and 159 countries around the world, the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) has earned recognition as an innovator in quality education for the world’s students. The IBO mission is to develop well-rounded, globally minded leaders who thrive and make a difference.
Kavod Charter School has adopted the IB MYP framework for our middle school program. This approach to teaching and learning is organized around 16 key interdisciplinary concepts, such as culture, communication, systems, and aesthetics, that engage students in deep learning across all subject areas. Kavod teachers expertly design learning units around these concepts in all 8 of our middle school courses:
🔹Language and Literature
🔹Mathematics
🔹Science
🔹Individuals and Societies
🔹Spanish
🔹Design
🔹A Visual and/or Performing Art Class
🔹Physical Education
Conceptually based learning is set in our diverse school and community context, making learning relevant and authentic. Additionally, Kavod explorers are asked to apply their learning to real-life problem solving scenarios within our greater community through service and action.
Kavod explorers also develop cross-cutting skills such as research, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration and self-management, skills essential for success in higher education and life.
Benefits of an IB Education
Learning in the IB MYP is a shift from traditional teacher-led curriculum to a student-initiated model. This model is highly motivating and produces students who not only possess deep conceptual knowledge, but also ownership and drive for their learning.
Colleges and universities around the world recognize the IB MYP as a rigorous, preparatory approach to teaching and learning that creates serious and well-rounded students. Students with an IB MYP background are distinguished from those with a more traditional American education system in the college admissions process.
The Kavod middle school model prepares students for further education, often launching students into an IB Diploma Programme in an IB high school or Advanced Placement (AP) tracks in a variety of courses at traditional US high schools.
Perhaps most importantly, students graduate from Kavod as well-balanced, bilingual thinkers and doers who understand our common and shared responsibilities within the world. Think your middle school student could benefit from an International Baccalaureate education? Our small charter school is enrolling for Fall 2023.
