The choice between private, public and charter schools can be overwhelming. From curriculum to mission, transportation to tuition, the seemingly endless options for personalization can make narrowing your decision down even more difficult. If you are new to charter schools, we’d like to take this opportunity to demystify the charter school choice and illuminate the incredible tuition-free education available for TK-8th graders at Kavod Charter School.

What is a Charter School?

A charter school is a publicly funded, independently operated public school. Most charter schools are started from the ground up, by a team of passionate educators and parents who see a need in the community and decide to fill it. Our small school is no different: Kavod Charter School was started out of a desire to offer students and the San Diego community a tuition-free option for non-religious Hebrew language learning in a school setting that raises the bar for student achievement and character.

Charter schools operate under a contract between the school and the state government that outlines how the school will educate students in exchange for public funds. A charter school’s authorization is renewed every five years based on agreed upon expectations for educating students, including state standards and testing. Our students participate in California state testing and regularly meet and exceed the average in reading and math, placing Kavod in the top 10% of charter schools in the U.S.

Tuition-Free Language Learning

Charter schools are always tuition-free. Charter leaders have to be creative about allocating school funds to the areas that allow their mission and students to flourish. At Kavod Charter School, learning the Modern Hebrew language is essential to our mission. We believe it not only has immeasurable academic benefits, like increased memory and focus, but also opens doors to a world of career and travel opportunities. As a Seal of Biliteracy pathway school, Kavod offers elementary students daily Hebrew language lessons that are lively and primed for young minds. Our middle school students continue to learn Hebrew and are also offered Spanish instruction.

Freedom to Innovate

Charter schools are usually centered on the needs of the student, often through a personalized curriculum or specialized offerings. Free to choose their best path to success, charters can be an exciting hub of innovation and creativity. Highly qualified teachers are often attracted to work at charter schools for a chance to teach in a less restrictive way, with greater creative freedom, or with like-minded teachers and staff.

Kavod Charter School offers San Diego families an innovative and balanced approach to developing global citizens. In addition to robust PE, music, art and Hebrew language learning, our elementary students thrive using a workshop model for reading and writing. Rigorous math instruction grows problem solving and critical thinking skills. At the middle school level, Kavod utilizes the world renowned International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme to develop curious, knowledgeable and empathetic individuals who strive to create a better world.

At the heart of our mission is honor and respect. It’s not only in our name (Kavod means honor and respect in Hebrew), but it’s woven throughout all aspects of our school, creating a culture that values education and the learning process. We invite you to join us in helping students reach their full potential. We’re enrolling tuition-freeTK-8 for Fall 2023.
