Second grade at Kavod is a big year. Explorers are becoming more independent, asking harder questions, and discovering what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves. The teachers who guide them through it matter enormously, and this school year Kavod’s 2nd grade has been in very good hands. Meet Ms. Julia Murcko, in her first year at Kavod, and Ms. Alexa McGee, now in her second: two educators who found their way to teaching through different paths, but who share a deep commitment to the respectful, globally minded community Kavod Charter School is built on.
Bringing their warmth, rigor, and genuine curiosity that make Kavod’s classrooms come alive, get to know Julia and Alexa below!
What is unique about 2nd grade at Kavod? What do you enjoy most about teaching students at this level?
Julia: We get to learn about so many fun things in second grade! Some of my favorite topics this year have been the Civil Rights Movement, the digestive system, and different ways of representing addition and subtraction. I enjoy the genuine curiosity and enthusiasm that I see in students at this level!
Alexa: One unique thing students learn in this grade is about civil rights, which is very impactful and helps them understand fairness, equality, and the importance of standing up for others. They also learn about the digestive system, which really captures their curiosity about how their bodies work. In addition, we do a lot of team building activities that help strengthen collaboration and communication skills.
What I enjoy most about teaching students at this level is that they are in a transitional phase. They’re becoming more independent, but they’re still not afraid to ask for help when they need it. It’s such a fun grade level because they are growing in confidence while still bringing enthusiasm and energy to learning every day.
Who or what inspired you to become an educator?
Julia: My grandmother was a multilingual educator and a great inspiration to me!
Alexa: I always knew I wanted to work with kids, but I wasn’t exactly sure in what capacity. In 2020, I got a job working at a Montessori school, and that’s when everything really clicked for me. I realized that teaching was something I truly wanted to pursue, and I’ve loved it ever since.
Q: How does Kavod’s mission and vision align with your personal and professional values?
Julia: I am passionate about providing students with opportunities to become well-rounded, multilingual global citizens. Kavod offers these opportunities through language classes, art classes, special events, and community involvement.
Alexa: Kavod’s mission aligns with my values, especially around respect and community. I believe it’s so important for students to feel valued and supported, and I try to create that kind of respectful environment in my classroom every day. I also appreciate the strong sense of community at Kavod, it’s something that makes the school feel welcoming and collaborative for both students and staff.
Q: What do you love most about your role at Kavod?
Julia: I love getting to know my students!
Alexa: What I love most about my role at Kavod is the strong sense of community among both the staff and students. It creates such a positive and supportive environment to be a part of every day. I also really appreciate the flexibility and trust I’m given in my classroom, the admin team is incredibly supportive and respects how we run our classrooms, which makes a huge difference. It allows me to be creative and truly meet the needs of my students.
Q: Share a favorite memory of your work at Kavod!
Julia: One of my favorite memories was watching my class practice and perform a dance for a school-wide event. They practiced so hard and left it all on the stage!
Alexa: A favorite memory of mine has definitely been joining in and playing games with my class, rather than just watching from the sidelines. I enjoy being part of the fun just as much as they enjoy having me involved, and those moments have brought a lot of laughter and connection. It’s something simple, but it’s created some really fun and meaningful experiences with my students.
Q: Tell us a bit about you – your hobbies, interests and family!
Julia: Outside of work I enjoy rock climbing, yoga, drawing, and reading!
Alexa: I’ve been living in San Diego for about six years now, and it’s truly my favorite place. I love spending time at the beach and being with my friends and family whenever I can. I also have two dogs who keep me very busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
