Respect Makes a World of Difference

Kavod Charter School was built on one of the most profound values in Hebrew. Kavod (כבוד) means “respect” or “honor” and shapes every aspect of our educational program and school community. At the heart of everything we teach, guiding how our students engage with learning, with one another, and with the world around them – is kavod. These values are woven throughout every fiber of the school, creating a culture of honor and respect towards education and the learning process.

Building Character through Community Action

At Kavod Charter School, we believe that true learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Not only do our students learn about respect, but they live it, practice it, and share it with their community through meaningful service-based learning experiences.

Our explorers (what we call our students) learn to expand their view of community beyond our school – and beyond San Diego to include the entire world. At Kavod Charter School, we feel a tremendous responsibility to lead by example and show our explorers the value in respecting themselves, each other, and all communities.

Through age-appropriate community service-learning activities that are integrated across our school curriculum, explorers learn the values of respect and understanding in our diverse community and beyond. One of our favorite school wide events of the year is Good Deeds Day, where explorers give back while developing compassion and empathy.

Our explorers enjoy history and cultural lessons from around the world. Together, we participate in events that celebrate our differences, like our Cultural Fair, as a way to learn about diverse global communities. Our school community is given the opportunity to learn just how interconnected we all are, the importance of appreciating other cultures, and how much more there is to explore.

Our community service-based learning projects aren’t just one day a year and then forgotten. Kavod students participate in weekly activities that help them to understand the importance of respect and good citizenship. Service learning is integrated across the curriculum so students learn the values of understanding and respect for others in every facet of their school day.

We dedicate time to focus on values and character traits such as:

  • Respect
  • Courtesy
  • Teamwork
  • Tolerance
  • Perseverance
  • Compassion
  • Empathy
  • Integrity
  • Responsibility

Through the principle of kavod, we’re raising a generation that sees respect as a value to embody in how they learn and shape the world around them. Interested in learning more about Kavod Charter School?
