Kavod Middle Schoolers thrive in our small school setting where the rapid growth and change of adolescence is seen as an opportunity to learn, discover new interests and shine as leaders in our TK-8 school. Our teachers develop strong relationships with students that not only support positive behavior but also higher achievement. We provide a well-rounded program that prepares students to be competent, capable and contributing members of society.

Kavod Charter School is proud to be an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Kavod is 1 of 4 schools in San Diego to offer the IB Middle Years Programme. Our middle school students are given priority preference for entrance into the SDUSD IB Diploma Programme high schools.

Core Components of the Kavod 6th-8th Program

International Baccalaureate

As the overarching organization of our middle school program, we utilize the IB MYP framework to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who will create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. This framework encourages students across the world to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Language & Literature

MYP language and literature courses equip students with linguistic, analytical, and communicative skills that help to develop interdisciplinary understanding. Students develop skills in six domains—listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and presenting—both independently and with others.

Mathematics

Through the MYP framework, students study numbers, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and probability to help solve problems both in the classroom and the real world. We offer an advanced mathematics track that allows for high school credit in Algebra.

Integrated Science & Design

Students will learn to appreciate and respect the ideas of others, gain good ethical reasoning skills and further develop their sense of responsibility as members of local and global communities. This course integrates the design thinking process with the traditional subjects of biology, chemistry, and the physical sciences.

Individuals & Societies

This subject group encourages learners to respect and understand the world around them and equips them with the necessary skills to inquire into historical, geographical, political, social, economic, and cultural factors that affect individuals, societies, and environments.

Hebrew and/or Spanish

Students at Kavod have the opportunity to learn Hebrew and Spanish. It is a requirement of our program that students participate in one or both languages in middle school.

Visual and/or Performing Arts

Kavod students engage in music and media arts to create, perform, and present arts in ways that engage and convey feelings, experiences, and ideas. Students have opportunities to function as artists, as well as learners of the arts. Involvement in the arts encourages students to understand the arts in context and the cultural histories of artworks, supporting the development of an inquiring and empathetic worldview.

Physical & Wellness Education

Physical and health education empowers students to understand and appreciate the value of being physically active and to develop the motivation for making healthy life choices. Middle school students learn about and through physical activity.

Preparation for High School

The rigor of the IB MYP not only prepares Kavod explorers for the challenge of high school, but experience in the program also provides an advantage when applying to a high school with the IB Diploma Years program. In addition to strong academics, we offer the opportunity to earn high school credits in Hebrew, Spanish, and Math.

The Learner Profile

The Kavod Learner Profile for our explorers encompasses all of the character traits of the IB Learner Profile. Our middle school students grow in character with thoughtful lessons and opportunities for leadership.

Enrichments & Electives

All students choose from a variety of enrichment and elective classes to pursue their personal interests. Sample courses include: Coding, Entrepreneurship, Theater, Yoga, Social Justice, Debate, Gardening, Photography, Student Council, and more.

Clubs & More

We offer a wide variety of clubs for all of our students to explore a new interest and find a place to belong. Some of the options we offer include: Dungeons & Dragons, Art, Non-Competitive Sports, Journalism, Band, Hebrew Support, LGBTQ+/Rainbow, Math Support, and Yearbook.

Leadership

Our leadership program invites middle schoolers to apply to be a Kavod Ambassador to our younger explorers. The program is highly honored as Ambassadors are selected for their positive record of demonstrating OLAM values. Ambassadors attend the first two days of elementary school to act as mentors for our TK-5 explorers, who are eager to learn from the oldest in the building. It’s another way we build strong bonds and a caring community at our tight-knit school.
