At Kavod Charter School, we call our students explorers, and we mean it! Explorers don’t just read about the world. They go out and experience it. That’s why field trips at Kavod aren’t just a fun day away from school. They’re a carefully designed part of how our students grow into bilingual, globally aware leaders who make a world of difference.

Here’s a look at where our explorers go, and why every destination is chosen with intention.

Fire Station Visits

Our youngest explorers aren’t quite ready to take on the city, so we bring the city to them. When the San Diego Fire Department visits Kavod’s campus, TK and kindergarten students get an up-close look at the brave community members who keep our neighborhoods safe. They meet the firefighters, explore the truck, and ask every question their curious little minds can think of. It’s community connection and civic awareness at exactly the right scale.

Wild Discoveries at the San Diego Zoo

Second graders take their sense of wonder to one of the world’s most celebrated zoos. The San Diego Zoo is a living classroom where students encounter animals and ecosystems from across the globe. For our young language learners, a visit like this reinforces the global awareness that is central to a Kavod education. The world is big, beautiful, and worth knowing.

Rooted in the Earth at Coastal Roots Farm

Third graders head to Coastal Roots Farm in Encinitas, a working farm rooted in the belief that sustainable agriculture can build stronger communities. It’s a natural fit for Kavod explorers, who are learning Hebrew, a language tied to a culture with deep agricultural traditions and an extraordinary legacy of land stewardship and innovation. Students get their hands in the soil, learn about where food comes from, and connect classroom lessons to the living world around them. Global awareness begins with appreciating the ground beneath your feet.

Business Town: Where Young Entrepreneurs Take Charge

Ask any Kavod 5th grader what their favorite field trip was this year, and there’s a good chance you’ll hear: BizTown. In this experiential program, students step into roles as business owners, employees, and community members, running a miniature economy for a day. They apply math, communication, and critical thinking in real time. It’s one of the most joyful and eye-opening experiences of elementary school, and watching these explorers rise to the challenge never gets old.

Leadership Camp at YMCA Raintree Ranch

The jump to middle school is a big one, and Kavod marks it in the best possible way. Sixth graders spend two nights and three days at YMCA Raintree Ranch for Leadership Camp, an experience designed to build confidence, deepen friendships, and develop the kind of teamwork that carries students through their middle school years and beyond. Away from screens and routines, explorers discover what they’re made of. Families consistently tell us this trip is a turning point: where their child came home feeling truly ready for what’s ahead.

An International Capstone

For our 8th grade explorers, the final year of their Kavod journey culminates in two extraordinary experiences. First, Kavod explorers traveled to Washington, D.C., walking the National Mall, visiting the monuments, and seeing the civic institutions they’ve studied come to life. There is something profoundly meaningful about standing in front of history with your classmates beside you.

Their second opportunity to travel with their Kavod classmates was an international trip to Israel. This past February, a select group of 8th graders traveled to Israel for a week-long cultural and educational journey, including a visit to the Dead Sea, one of the most extraordinary natural wonders on the planet. For students who have spent years learning Modern Hebrew, stepping into the land where that language lives and breathes is an experience that cannot be replicated in any classroom. It is language learning made real. It is global awareness made personal.

Learning That Goes Beyond the Classroom

At Kavod, each field trip is an experience that is thoughtfully connected to who our students are as explorers: curious, respectful, and ready to engage with the world. From TK to 8th grade, every destination is a chapter in the story of becoming a bilingual, globally aware, values-driven leader.
