This year, Kavod Charter School kicked off an Education Series that parents are raving about!

At Kavod, we strive to support our families and constantly better ourselves to make a world of difference. One of our core values lies in being lifelong learners, and the Education Series perfectly exemplifies that notion. Information in the series is relevant to individuals of any age and relationship to the school. We spoke with Eric Lopez, Director of School Culture at Kavod and now the Leader of Kavod’s Education Series to dive deeper into this powerful resource provided to families.

Tell Us About Your New Role as Director of School Culture!

My role consists of ensuring a positive school culture through supporting relationships, school expectation adherence and establishing leadership opportunities for our explorers. I am the admin point of contact for anything involving interactions between explorers, behaviors, or any issues that would be considered school culture. I am also a good resource for parents regarding questions about policies and disciplinary measures that the school implements.

What Inspired the Education Series? What Topics are Covered?

More than anything, the Education Series was created to support our families on topics that might be difficult to discuss with their explorers at home and to give them knowledge and resources for bridging this gap in communication. A secondary purpose is to reach as wide an audience as possible about these topics in a welcoming and easy to access setting.

Topics in this series include internet safety, the difference between conflict and bullying, speaking to your explorer about mental health issues, and even helping your child prepare for stress that may come along with assessments and the changing landscape from elementary to middle school.

The specific items covered in these series include reviewing the classroom interventions that we use to help our explorers regulate their behaviors such as our green/blue card system, ASES (Alternative Schedule Explorer Support), Think Sheets, Community Service, etc.

How does this Series support Kavod Parents and Explorers?

This series helps to establish a link between the topics explorers hear about and experience at school and how these carry on into the home. Basically it keeps the parents informed of the things their little ones experience and gives them an opening to bring up those topics at home in a way that keeps the information consistent for everyone.

Parents appreciate the fact that they are now more knowledgeable of the policies we have at school and how they relate to their particular explorer. They also mention liking the setting as it makes this information seem like more of a valuable insight than a lecture. We take input on the topics families would like to see and constructive feedback is always encouraged.

Thank you Mr. Lopez for sharing an in-depth look into the Education Series and enlightening us on this invaluable link to our families.
