In today’s rapidly changing educational landscape, it’s ideal for schools to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to curriculum, technology, policies, and trends. Here at Kavod Charter School, we are and have always been  – ahead of the game. Our dynamic learning environment is not only up-to-date and constantly evolving, but we are leaders when it comes to classroom innovation and our commitment to excellence.

Here at Kavod Charter School, we offer our families peace of mind that their children are receiving a top-tier education. We lead in groundbreaking policies, important programming, and restorative approaches including Growth Mindset.

Growth Mindset

Made popular by Carol Dweck and Restorative Approaches, Kavod Charter School adapted Growth Mindset years before restorative approach hit the mainstream airwaves. The “Power of Yet” is the mindset that: “If we don’t know something, we don’t know it yet.” Our explorers complete work primarily in pen over pencil so that they cannot erase mistakes, but rather understand that mistakes are a part of the learning process.

Mistakes happen academically, and in our social lives as well. At Kavod, we implemented restorative approaches around discipline from day one. We have a Director of School Culture who takes the time to see that every interaction has two perspectives and works to grow our explorers into respectful citizens by ensuring our explorers understand how their actions impact others.

Groundbreaking Policies

No Required Elementary Homework: It has been proven that homework does not support the academic aptitude progress for students. Therefore, Kavod explorers at the elementary level are not required to complete home review or home practice and are not penalized for not completing work at home. At Kavod, we encourage home reading, the one aspect that has been proven to make a difference in all subjects.

No Cell Phone Policy: Kavod understands the importance of social interactions. It is our policy that students may not have cell phones out during the school day. Not having a cell phone on your desk increases academics and reduces anxiety among students, which is why we stick by our policy. We even ask our middle school students to not have their cell phones present during school dances to help students feel more comfortable being in the moment and enjoying their time with each other. Other districts in the area are just now looking into enacting a no cell phone policy.

Open Conferences: Our Conferences are open for students to attend. We want to open the floor to both our parents and students. We believe that if students are the core of their education, they need to be involved in the discussion too. Being involved in the conference helps students build autonomy, confidence, and to advocate for themselves

Important Programming

Kavod’s Language Program: Research shows that children gain academic advantages when they begin to study a foreign language at an early age. In recent years, the state of California has placed a lot of emphasis on dual language and the cognitive benefits for students. Our Charter School Program was founded on dual-language. Did you know we are a Seal of Biliteracy Pathway School? Explorers have the ability to earn recognition for dual-language and literacy at multiple points throughout the educational program. We are thrilled that the state of California is seeing the cognitive benefits and daily value of bilingual education, and we are so proud that not only does our program meet these emphasis, but we were their first!

Music and Arts: Music and Arts have always been a core component at Kavod. Just recently a CA voter initiative provided funding for the arts, but we have been bringing music into our classrooms for years. Music and Arts have a positive impact on the cognitive abilities of students which is why we have always prioritized offering a well balanced program for our students.

Cursive: Cursive instruction was recently enacted into California law earlier this year, but Kavod has been teaching cursive since we opened our first 3rd grade class in 2014.

Recess: Studies show the importance of recess for elementary and middle aged students. We have always provided ample recess to our explorers. Stretch breaks keep our students geared up to take on our rigorous academics.

Transitional Kindergarten Classes – Transitional Kindergarten Classes are nothing new at Kavod Charter School, we have been offering designated TK classes for the past 6 years.

Service Learning: Respect Makes a World of Difference. Kavod students partake in weekly activities that help them understand the importance of respect, helping others, and good citizenship.
