Working within a network of schools across the country, Kavod Elementary receives the benefit of partnering with the Hebrew Charter School Center.
The Hebrew Charter School Center (HCSC) is a nonprofit organization created by the Areivim Philanthropic Group in 2009 to help advance the Hebrew language charter school movement. HCSC works with planning teams and existing charter schools across the country to:
• Build and increase the capacity for designing new, high quality Hebrew language charter schools;
• Provide resources for established schools;
• Grow a field of educators prepared to lead Hebrew language charter schools and the movement;
• Promote and support a network of high quality Hebrew language charter schools;
• Support local communities to develop Hebrew language charter schools and to maximally benefit from their impact on children and families.
The Hebrew Charter School Center continues to grow and will enroll more than 1,500 students in their network of schools during 2014-15, representing a 50 percent increase over the current school year.
In the five currently operating schools, the students’ parents come from 78 different countries and more than 25 different languages are spoken in the homes.
In 2014-15, the network will include Hebrew Language Academy in Brooklyn (serving grades K-5); Hatikvah International Academy in New Brunswick, N.J. (serving grades K-5); Harlem Hebrew (serving grades K-2); Sela Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. (serving grades Pre-K-2); Kavod Elementary in San Diego (serving grades K-3); and Lashon Academy in Los Angeles (serving grades K-2). Across the schools, 1,894 applications were received for 583 available spaces.
MISSION
HCSC will promote the development and sustainability of the Hebrew charter school movement by supporting a network of excellent schools that serve diverse populations of students, foster strong inter-personal relationships, advance overall academic and social/emotional well-being, and promote high levels of Hebrew language proficiency and the culture of Israel and its immigrant communities.
SCOPE
HCSC is working to accomplish its mission in the following ways:
• Proactively recruiting communities and local team leaders to establish new schools;
• Awarding planning and support grants to charter school development teams;
• Providing technical assistance in the creation and development of schools;
• Helping identify and train school leaders, teachers and Board members;
